It pisses me off to hear when someone is criticized for working carefully on color in a data visualization, such as "that was a waste of time to spend on that". The truth is that it's not wasted time, it's taking care of your audience by communicating insights carefully.
-
Often times, these critics will present data and assume their insights should be "obvious", forgetting that it is not obvious to anyone except themselves. Then they wonder why no one "got" their data or their paper.
-
Time spent on a data viz is not wasted if it helps to communicate the insight you want your audience to take from the data.
-
It's this empathy for your audience that will make your visualizations effective. I wish we spent more time on this when we teach data science. Kind of like when architecture students do critique sessions.
