        1. Reading a book called “The Power of Fun” by Catherine Price. In it she argues that instead of aspiring to wealth or fame, we should aspire to fun. She defines fun as the “confluence of playfulness, connection, and flow.” They are activities that enrich us and energize us.

Fun connects us to others in a way that strengthens our relationships, and allows for trying novel things without self-consciousness. It allows us to sidestep worry for a little bit, and to be in the flow of the activity without taking ourselves too seriously.

To seek fun is an attitude that seems frivolous to many people. However, we need escape. We need it or we become dull boys and girls. Maximizing fun means maximizing opportunities to hang out with those who give us energy and joy. It gives us humor and resilience.

To do this, we need to differentiate fake fun (such as just consuming social media) from real fun: those activities that actually energize us. This is different for everyone. It may be group music lessons, singing in a choir, talking #RStats…

Having fun together connects us and strengthens our social bonds. There is a real purpose to fun. The rest of the book helps you identify those activities that are real fun, and how to make space for it in your life. Great read.

It has inspired me to let go of some activities that feel like obligations or are no longer fun.
