I know I have been quiet about the Eric Lander thing. I have seen this kind of abuse by those with scientific clout and also been subject to it. "Brilliant" toxic people bring an org down more than they bring it up.
-
Their behavior actually makes the org worse. Their effect on morale is terrible. If you want to learn more, I highly suggest the "No Asshole" rule: gsb.stanford.edu/faculty-research/books/no-asshole-rule-building-civilized-workplace-surviving-one-isnt

The best way to fix this is not necessarily to rout the assholes out, but preventative measures. Don't hire them to begin with. Prioritize candidates who are kind and have a track record of collaboration.
-
Don't confuse scientific output with leadership ability. Many assholes fail upwards.

That said, seeing this generation taking less shit from PIs and academia gives me a lot of hope that the culture is shifting.
