      1. Realizing that collaboration is a driving value in my life. And I am suspicious of anyone who discourages collaboration, whether it be from being territorial, or whatever.

Collaboration is something that can help make the world better for everyone and raise all ships. Those people who discourage it are stuck in the quid pro quo of scientific feudalism.

I always feel like a good collaboration is like being in a good jazz band. What you make with your collaborators is not what you’d make on your own. That’s a good thing. There is a lot of give and take and improvisation in collaboration.

But there has to be respect, and you have to listen to what your band mate is playing, and try to base your contribution based on their contribution. Use the “Yes, and…” rule of improv. Build each other up. It’s how you make great things.

There is too much negative criticism in the world already. And a good collaboration can be truly fun and amazing. Working with the right people who share your values can be incredibly invigorating and energizing.

That’s why when I meet someone who shares my values, I figure out a way to work with them, on anything. It enriches my life to no end, and I think it has been something that’s saved me time and again.

It certainly helped save me from the worst parts of academia. Co-founding @cascadiarconf with an amazing group came at a really low time in my life, and it was so fun. I still really feel connected to everyone I worked with it.

They are all such amazing people, and the #rstats community and open science groups such as @rOpenSci really opened my eyes that there were people like me out there. Keep at it, friends. May you all find your bandmates.
