    1. I find it paradoxical that all of the time I have learned about reproducibility and making better, reproducible analyses was considered a waste of time by my collaborators. Yet, they have all tangibly benefitted from this learning, so....it really wasn't a waste of time.

And this is the hitch with research training. There is no money for it, and it is actively discouraged by PIs as a waste of time. Which is why we at BioData Club have basically had to scrounge and work on a volunteer basis.

But honestly, it's been hard to recruit students to participate and teach (when we can pay them), because of this short sighted attitude. The solution of recruiting more faculty rather than supporting what's already there has been, well, frustrating.

But I guess it's easier to do what you've always done, rather than try to support innovative learning communities where everyone can teach each other. Every workshop we've led has been enthusiastically received, especially by staff.

What we do is way different than something like Lynda.com or the other platforms. We provide a community that helps each other learn. But it's not valued. I've worn myself out doing this on a volunteer basis.

I do it because it needs to be done, not because we have been supported. But I'm really worn out.

I apologize if I seem bitter. Maybe we should have recruited more support from higher-ups. The problem is that everyone is so cautious and they want something for their own department and for no one else.

Ultimately, the financial incentive structures are something that work against something like this. Until these change, it's not going to be possible to get support.
