@sharlagelfand @rlbarter Yes, for sure. No slights to CS people, but not everything can be reduced to a graph or a four color problem. Like Nate Silver mentions, data scientists need to be agile, like foxes, and not wedded to a single method, like hedgehogs.

@sharlagelfand @rlbarter One of the solutions is that academic departments need to do is build more partnerships with industry and send their students to work on real data issues. But there's a little too much insularity and insecurity in the field.

@sharlagelfand @rlbarter We do this in my department by doing internships with known partners. I mostly provide additional support, but the students work with an industry mentor. I've seen students make leaps and bounds in pulling their knowledge together because they had to apply it.
