As a data scientist, curiosity should drive you in understanding the the problems to be solved. Be empowered to ask basic questions and don't be afraid of looking "dumb". It's more like being thorough and showing your collaborators that you care enough to learn and listen.

As soon as you can, try and rephrase the problems in your own words (it can be hard) to help them understand if there is anything you missed. It's ok to be wrong at this step, too. You want your collaborators to correct you and you should respond by rewording their corrections.

I think some of the most powerful words in a collaboration are "I don't understand, do you mean ____?" Again, it shows you are being thorough and you care about solving the problem correctly.

However, this assumes that you are in a psychologically safe environment. Many work environments aren't. If you need to protect yourself, do. Find people in the group you trust.
